Sydney Opera House Lighting up red

On the 18th of February 2015, Australian Council for the Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China (ACPPRC) hosted a special Chinese New Year Eve Celebration - Light-up Sydney Opera House in red.

The Hon Mike Baird, the Premier of NSW; H.E. Li Huaxin, Consul-General (Ambassadorial rank) of PRC in Sydney; The Hon. Philip Ruddock MP, Federal MP for Berowra, Chairman of the Australia-China Parliamentary Friendship Group; Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Social Services; Mr. David Coleman MP, Federal Member for Banks NSW; The Hon. Gladys Berejiklian MP, NSW Minister for Transport; The Hon. Victor Dominello MP, NSW Minister for Citizenship and Communities; Mr. Matt Kean MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Communities; Mr. Mark Coure MP, Member for Oatley; The Hon. Ernest Wong MLC , together with ACPPRC Chairman Xiangmo Huang at the Overseas Passenger Terminal for the ceremony - activated the lasers that turned the Opera House’s sails red to mark the start of the Year of the Goat.

Premier Baird said, “The sails of the Opera House have been bathed in red to mark this special occasion for the past two years and I’m pleased to announce they will light up again in 2016. I look forward to seeing the Opera House turn ‘China red’ as we farewell the Year of the Horse and welcome the beginning of the Year of the Goat. The largest Chinese New Year celebration outside of China takes place in Sydney and I look forward to celebrating this auspicious time of year with my Chinese friends".

There were Lions Dance performance and fireworks display at the ceremony.

Before the Lighting up Ceremony, ACPPRC organised a Chinese New Eve Celebration Banquet at Quay Restaurant. Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, David Coleman MP, Minister Victor Dominello MP, and Mark Coure MP delivered speeches at the banquet.

Thousands of Sydneysiders and tourists went down to the harbour to take pictures of the red Opera House and exchange New Year blessings with relatives and friends.
